“New Zealand seems to have a high level of participation in all kinds of sports. All the parks and fields seem to be full of people playing touch, netball, rugby or jogging and walking," says Richard Watkinson.
Secondary teachers in demand!
New Zealand secondary schools are experiencing an increase in rolls as a result of a population boom in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The number of secondary school students is expected to peak around 2008. This is expected to coincide with an increase in teacher retirements.
Over the next five years there will be a continued need for secondary teachers, especially those qualified to teach mathematics, physics, chemistry, technology, and to a lesser extent, English and biology.
There is an ongoing demand for qualified and experienced teachers in all subjects.
In New Zealand, recognised secondary teaching qualifications take at least four years of full-time study at university institutions. Overseas trained secondary teachers with shorter degrees or diplomas will not be granted New Zealand equivalency and will therefore be paid on a lower salary than teachers with four year qualifications.
