Steph Lamond

Steph Lamond History teacher

" Teaching is great for travelling. I taught for three years in the UK … and that allowed me to enjoy a decent lifestyle and travel lots."

Steph’s teaching career kicked off in rural Otago where she taught English and History for two years at Blue Mountain College.

Three years OE in the UK followed, where she says " It was easy to get work. And the good income allowed me to enjoy a decent lifestyle and travel lots. Teaching is great for travelling."

Originally, Steph found herself teaching because she needed an outlet for her history degree and her passion for the subject. " History is really important for young people today. It gives them a context for current events and they develop an understanding of what has gone on in the world. Employers are finding students who have studied history have developed organisational skills, can construct arguments and process ideas with relative ease. This is acknowledged by employers even in the computer industry."

Steph says that the best thing about teaching is " the randomness - every day is different, it’s never regimented or repetitious."

" There’s so much interaction with people in teaching, and those very special moments when students learn and I see they are getting something from my lessons are priceless."
