Career changer

If you are a career changer who is considering primary teaching, you can choose from one of these options to complete a primary teaching qualification at a teacher education provider:

  • Complete a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (primary) if you already have a degree or
  • Complete a Diploma of Teaching (primary) or Bachelor of Teaching (primary) or
  • Complete a combined degree and primary teaching qualification or
  • Complete a general degree followed by a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (primary)

You can choose a method of study from a variety of options such as campus-based, online and distance, and whether you study full time or part time.

TeachNZ Teacher Recruitment Scholarships (Māori Medium) are available if you are interested in teaching in a total immersion or bilingual setting. The 2008 scholarships include a new category for career changers. TeachNZ Teacher Recruitment Scholarships (Rural) are also available to encourage people to teach in rural areas.
