Career changer
More and more people look to go teaching mid career these days as they seek the challenge of wanting to make a difference to young adults’ lives.
If you are thinking of changing your career to become a secondary teacher, first ensure your undergraduate or proposed degree includes two teaching subjects for secondary teaching. Otherwise you may have to do further study before completing a Graduate Diploma of Teaching.
If you are a career changer considering secondary teaching, you can choose from these options to complete a secondary teaching qualification at a teacher education provider:
- Study a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (secondary) if you already have a specialist subject degree or
- Complete a specialist subject degree followed by a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (secondary) or
- Complete a combined degree and secondary teaching qualification.
TeachNZ scholarships for career changers have recently been introduced to encourage more people into technology and Māori Medium/Māori language teaching. These scholarships have closed for 2008. Check our website from September each year for information on the next round of scholarships.
